When I began writing A Couple Who Finds Love, in early 2024 I didn’t know if I could finish the story. It’s a story about love being tested by a fight with cancer — a subject close to home for more people than we care to admit.
This book did not begin with a character or a plot, but with a conversation in a park.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
A friend I met at a local park told me that their partner had just been diagnosed with cancer, and everything changed for them overnight. Fear replaced routine, and time shrank. What struck me most was the way they spoke about their love, not as a comfort blanket, but as a fight. A refusal to give up. A determination to remain close, even when fear made it easier to pull away.
“Romance isn’t about the first kiss — it’s about the fourth argument.”
When I think of love stories, I often imagine fairy tales and happy endings. But real love stories are forged in the crucible of life’s most challenging moments. This is the story of a couple who found love not in the absence of hardship, but in the very heart of it. The couple’s journey through the trials of cancer is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love to heal and transform.
- What This Book Taught Me
Nathan and Gillian (from my debut novel) taught me about the beginnings of a writing journey. But the couple in this book taught me about endurance — how love holds on, even when nothing else does. It is not perfect without struggle and commitment.
- If You’ve Been There, You’re Not Alone
This was the hardest novel I’ve written. But it’s also the one I’m proudest of. I hope it meets you where you are — and if you’ve ever faced something similar, I hope you feel seen.
Have you or someone close faced a health crisis? I’d love to hear how it shaped your view of love.
