When your partner goes through a tough time, it can be challenging to know how to support them. From losing a job or a loved one to face an injury or illness, your partner may experience a range of emotions and difficulties that can last for months or even years. In these challenging times, it is important to be there for them and show them that you love and support them no matter what. Here are some ways to help your partner during tough times:
- Listen without criticizing.
When your partner is going through a difficult time, the last thing they need is someone who is critical or judgmental. Instead, listen to them with an empathetic ear and show genuine interest in their concerns. Ask them to sit with you and talk through the situation, without making them feel responsible or judged for their circumstances.
- Encourage them not to give up.
It is essential to be there for your partner and encourage them during tough times. Express your apologies and support, but also assure them that it is normal to go through tough times. Listening empathetically means sitting down with your partner, listening carefully, and showing interest in their issue. When your partner is going through some difficult moment, you need to listen to them. However, don’t listen with a critical ear but with an empathetic one. You will only make them sadder when you judge them or make them feel responsible for their situation. You can hug them and request them to sit with you. Out of this, you can start figuring it out together.
- Assist them in developing a game plan.
After accepting that there is a problem, the next thing to figure out must be the solution.
You will only spend part of the time there encouraging your partner. Well, you encouraged them, so what next?
Assist in coming up with something that can solve their problem and be part of it. Did they lose a job? What about holding their hand to start a business?
- Consider getting help from outside.
At times, the damage caused by an unpleasant situation might be too severe. In such a case, you need to take some action.
If you realize that your partner is falling into depression, consider taking them to a psychologist or counsellor to help them recover. If they became addicted to a substance overnight, it is prudent to take them to a rehabilitation centre.
Source out for help if it is beyond your ability!
- Be Playful a little bit.
Let the partner feel that you still value them and teasing them a little bit confirms that nothing in you has changed towards them. While your partner is facing difficulties in life, being serious is a good thing but being a little bit playful does not hurt at all.
Romantic relationships are meant for many things, supporting one another at the lowest of times being one of them. Never let your partner suffer when you can chip in and help them recover from their situation.
